What to Expect From a Landscape Design Project (Start to Finish)

A new landscape is a big investment, and it’s normal to wonder how the process works before you commit. Here’s what a design-and-install project looks like with Hernandez Landscaping.

Step 1: Free estimate and needs analysis

Every project starts with a visit to your yard. We’ll meet with you to understand your needs and assess your landscape — sun and shade, slopes, drainage, existing plants, soil and your current sprinkler system.

Come ready to talk about:

• How you want to use the space — entertaining, kids and pets, quiet relaxation, gardening
• What you like — photos from Pinterest, neighbors’ yards, or places you’ve visited
• What bugs you now — dead spots, high water bills, too much mowing, no privacy
• A rough budget range — it helps us recommend what will give you the most for your money

Step 2: Agree on the design

Next, we’ll agree on how to execute based on your vision and your budget. This is where ideas turn into a plan: where the lawn goes (or doesn’t), planting beds, rock and boulders, water features, patios, and how it all gets watered.

A good design works with your yard’s limitations rather than against them. A slope can become a terraced bed or a rock waterfall. A shady corner can become a patio instead of a struggling patch of grass.

Step 3: Installation

Once the design is agreed, our crew builds it. Depending on the project that can include grading, irrigation, planting, rockwork, ponds and waterfalls, and patios with fire pits or seat walls.

Step 4: Ongoing care (optional)

A new landscape needs attention while plants establish. Many customers add weekly maintenance — mowing, fertilization, sprinkler checks and cleanup — so the yard keeps looking the way it did on day one.
