Xeriscaping vs. a Traditional Lawn: Which Is Right for Your Salt Lake Yard?

Utah is one of the driest states in the country, and outdoor watering is where a big share of household water goes. That’s pushed a lot of Salt Lake homeowners to ask: should I keep my lawn, or go waterwise?

The honest answer is that it depends on how you use your yard. Most of the best landscapes we see are a mix of both.

The case for a traditional lawn

A traditional landscape — lush lawn, garden beds, shade trees and shrubs — is hard to beat if:

  • You have kids or dogs who need a soft place to play
  • You love the look of the yard you grew up with
  • You want a classic, established feel in the front yard

The trade-off is water and upkeep. A lawn needs regular mowing, fertilizing, and a sprinkler system that’s set up and maintained well.

The case for xeriscaping

Xeriscaping (also called desert or waterwise landscaping) uses drought-tolerant plants, rock, boulders, mulch and drip irrigation instead of turf. It’s a good fit if:

  • You want an easy-to-maintain yard and less mowing
  • You’d like a lower summer water bill
  • You have hard-to-water spots like park strips or slopes

Done well, a xeriscape isn’t just gravel. Layered plants, boulders, dry creek beds and pathways give it texture and color year-round.

The middle ground most people choose

You don’t have to pick one. A common approach in Salt Lake:

  • Keep lawn where you actually use it — a play area or a backyard gathering space
  • Convert the rest — park strips, side yards, steep slopes and front-yard corners — to waterwise planting
  • Upgrade irrigation — drip for beds, efficient heads for turf, and a schedule that matches the season

Utah also periodically offers rebates for replacing lawn with waterwise landscaping. Programs and eligibility change, so check what’s currently available for your city before you start.
